ANZSI Library recommences operations
Following the easing of COVID-19 related restrictions in Melbourne, the ANZSI Library has now recommenced operations.
ANZSI event, ‘Business Tips: Quoting’, 10 November 2020, 3.00–4.30pm EDST
The application of a professional approach to quoting, based on a good understanding of the quoting process, is a key factor in operating a successful freelance indexing business. The aim of this session is to assist ANZSI members in developing (or enhancing) the necessary skills, resources and confidence to produce professional quotes. To this end, a panel of highly experienced freelance indexers will
- distinguish between various types of requests for quotes
- provide tips on applying a professional approach to quoting
- outline the various methods of calculating a fee
- discuss the key issues and challenges related to quoting for different types of texts, and
- be available to address your questions.
PANEL MEMBERS:
Nikki Davis has over fifteen years’ experience as a freelance indexer, and focuses on topics related to the humanities and social sciences, particularly architecture, art, education, history, religion and sociology. In addition, Nikki has previous editorial research and library cataloguing experience.
Karen Gillen has operated a freelance indexing, editing and proofreading business for almost 24 years. She specialises in the social sciences, humanities and law. Karen has also conducted indexing training workshops for ANZSI, and is currently ANZSI Education Officer.
Sherrey Quinn is a librarian, information consultant and freelance indexer. Throughout her career, she has indexed print and electronic publications and digital resources across a broad range of subject areas. Sherrey also develops and presents training programs related to her library and indexing work.

ASI Online Learning: Culinary Indexing—Food for Thought Three-Part Series October 14, 21, and 28, 2020
Indexers play a vital role in creating the cookbooks that readers love. Their work guides cooks and chefs to the recipe they are looking for or helps them discover ones they didn’t know about. Because they are used again and again, cookbooks have a large number of repeat readers, relying on you to help them find “that” recipe.
Since no two cookbooks are the same, each index is custom made, unique to that book. As an indexer, how do you determine what to include? Do you index the recipe titles? Which ingredients should be indexed? If the cookbook is for a particular style of eating, like low-fat or gluten-free, how does that impact your indexing decisions? What choices do you make to help readers who are browsing an index vs. searching an index for a specific recipe? How do you handle different terms for food, such as in British vs. American English?
