The Indexing Society of Canada / Société canadienne d’indexation (ISC/SCI) is pleased to announce that Sandra Muchekeza is the 2020 ISC/SCI Diversity in Canadian Publishing Bursary Award recipient.

With this bursary, the ISC/SCI aims to help achieve equality of opportunity for aspiring indexers belonging to underrepresented and/or marginalized groups. The bursary covers fees for an approved indexing program, two years of ISC membership with listing, and entry into the Mary Newberry Mentorship program https://indexers.ca/resources/mentorship

ASI Webinar: ‘Indexing Arabic Names What Everyone Should Know’ with AElfwine Mischler, 12 August 2020

This webinar explains potential difficulties in indexing both modern and premodern Arabic names. What do you do with the definite article and its variants? What is Al when it’s not an article? What names must not be split? When and where do you invert names? The materials for this webinar are based in part on errors found in published indexes.

This webinar will help you to recognize

  • the definite article and its variants
  • compound names tha tmust not be split
  • titles that are mistaken for surnames
  • whether and where to invert names

Ælfwine Mischler is an American indexer based in Cairo. She has been editing Islamic studies and other materials for many years and has been indexing since 2014, primarily in Islamic studies, Middle East studies, and Egyptology. She has written about indexing and about romanized Arabic in English texts on An American Editor blog and has published in The Indexer on Arabic terms in embedded book indexes.

Biography Indexing Q&A 26 July 2020 (ANZSI members only event)

Would you like to know something about, or expand your knowledge on, the indexing of stories about people’s lives and personal experiences? Is this an area you would like to develop as a specialty?

All ANZSI members, regardless of location or indexing experience, are invited to attend this video meeting. A panel of indexers will be available to discuss some of the issues and challenges related to indexing biographies, and to answer your questions.

PRESENTER:    Madeleine Davis, ANZSI President.
Madeleine specialises in indexing biographies, has been the recipient of an ANZSI indexing award, and is currently writing a review of the latest edition of Hazel Bell’s Indexing Biographies and other stories of human lives (Liverpool University Press, 2020) for publication in The Indexer.

PANEL:     Tordis Flath (NZ), Trevor Matthews (NSW), Michael Wyatt (NSW)
Each of the panel members specialises in indexing biographies. Tordis and Trevor have both been the recipients of indexing awards, and Michael is a highly experienced indexer and Life Member of ANZSI.
